SUMMARY OF THE HCMTR PROJECT
The High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) encircles a large part of the cities of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Pune is a city located in Western part of India, in the state of Maharashtra and is around 160 km east of Mumbai. Pune formerly known as Poona, based on Census 2011 is the 9th most populous city and in Urban Agglomeration eighth largest city in India (source: Mumbai Dt., 31st October 2011, Press Information Bureau, Government of India) and the second largest in the state of Maharashtra after Mumbai, is situated 560 metres (1,837 feet) above sea level on the Deccan Plateau. As the city expanded unevenly, a large number of roads were built around the central portion of the city, including the major highways which link the city to other parts of the country.
